Woody Woodstock was saved from slaughter back in Februay 2016. He was one of 4 little boys who had ended up at a beef fattening factory in Norfolk. Male calves bornd to dairy mothers are either slaughtered at birth or a few days after as of course their mothers milk is needed for humans to drink and make cheese with.

Some boys however will be sent for fattening to keep the population fed with pies and steaks etc. Woody and his friends were the lucky ones that fateful day they were rescued by a supporter and brought to the Sanctuary. Last month however we nearly lost poor Woody as during the TB testing he slipped and fell over inside the corridor of the machinary that had been brought in to facilitate the testing. It is virtually impossible to adminsier the test withough the animals being restrained in a cattle crush as clearly a 1000 kg cow like Woody will not simply stand still and let a vet do the injections. Its a horrible procedure, but we are required to have it done by law.

When he slipped, due to his size he was unable to get up as in all honestly, the cattle equipment is not geared for cows as big as ours as generally boy cows will never it past a few years :'( With careful work with several straps and the expert forklift driving our our friend, we managed to get Woody out, however he still was unable to get up. The vet gave him a pain killer and he got up after about 20 minutes.

He made a fantastic recovery, however we remain more than upset that we are forced to put the animals through this stress given they will never be moved nor enter the food chain
