This is Gerda (Mum to Pancake)

Day 1

Gerda came from Colchester Livestock Market where she had been sent for slaughter having reached an age where she was no longer considered any use to continue to produce 'beef' - that having been her 'job' since she had been old enough to breed.

Gerda was a very angry Cow on arrival at the Sanctuary - the angriest we had ever had - in fact she would put her head down and charge if anyone went to near her.

Little did we know but she was in calf at the time - so would have otherwise gone to her death with her baby inside

We didn't know her baby had been born some months later as she had hidden him in the barn under some straw. Her attempt we believe to stop him being taken away as had all her previous babies

After some time she realised she was going to be allowed to keep Pancake (who was born on Shrove Tuesday) and she calmed down

Now she is hugely better and much calmer and lives with her baby who is now grown up - along with a considerable number of friends !
